We are currently working with a French consultancy working on a large Dam Project in Africa, they are currently looking for a particular candidate to fill the following position, here is some information on the post and project:
Assignment:
Chief Resident Engineer with at least 15 years of experience in Civil Works. This will last approximately 12-16 months.
Mission:
Construction supervision of the works at Massingir dam, including the administration of the contract (FIDIC Red Book type for MDBs use), with the support of the Home Office. Head of the site team composed also of one engineer, three supervisors, and one secretary.
Scope of the works of the project:
Essentially the Works comprises the following:
i) Construction of an auxiliary spillway on the Left Bank of the Massingir dam – the auxiliary spillway will be composed by an approach unlined channel, a 170m-wide concrete weir equipped with 14 fusegates, a restitution channel 400m-long, concrete lined over 100m long, a bridge over the auxiliary spillway, and earth fill embankments allowing to connect the auxiliary spillway to the existing embankment dam on its right abutment, and to close the reservoir on its left abutment;
ii) Strengthening works of the Portela saddle dam on the Right Bank of the Massingir dam – the works will include the raising of the dam crest and the construction of a downstream berm;
iii) protective earth fills at the downstream toe of the existing dam – the works will include the cleaning of around 120,000 m² areas downstream of the main valley dam and downstream of the right bank dam, the placement of protective earth fills composed by a filter layer overlaid by a random fill coming from the auxiliary spillway excavations
Location:
The proposed project is located in the southern Gaza province of Mozambique and is part of Limpopo Basin which covers 80,000 km2 of the Mozambican territory. The project area includes the Massingir town near the South African border.
Climate:
The project area is a dry steppe-type climate with annual rainfall of only 600 mm. Mean monthly temperatures ranging between 19° C and 28° C.
Accommodation:
The Engineer will get one accommodation and one vehicle
The accommodation will in the base-camp
Rotation:
– 6 works days per week / 3 weeks of works and one week of recuperation or 2 months of works and 3 weeks of recuperation.
– the assignment is a long term assignment for 17 months. – one international return air ticket every six months
Detailed tasks assigned:
The Chief Resident Engineer is required to:
Lead all site activities carried out by the Engineer and by the Employer, under the direction of the Project Manager and the Project Director of the Home Office in Paris.
Manage and coordinate the work of the resident team on site
Preparation of the monthly progress reports and assistance in the preparation of the project completion report.
Perform (i) detailed inspection of the works, (ii) test when necessary the materials to be used, (iii) order/require tests whenever necessary to ensure perfect compliance of the works with the specifications, (iv) order substitution of improper materials, (v) order re-execution of improper work, and (vi) keep daily records of site/works activities in the site log-book.
Make the measurements of completed works to verify quantities claimed for payment by Contractors and jointly certify those payments with the Employer.
Supervise all the works to be done at the site and, after the Employer’s approval authorise time extension for the completion of the works.
Evaluate, comment and approve in consultation with the Project Manager and the Project Director of the Home Office in Paris all documents, drawings, calculations booklets submitted by the contractor for approval.
Review and accept in consultation with Office in Paris the Contractor’s programmes or arrange for modification thereof as appropriate and ensure completion dates are reasonable.
Administer in consultation with Office in Paris the execution by Contractors of all matters concerning safety and care of the works. Recommend to the Employer all such measures to avoid any risk affecting the safety of personnel, works, and adjacent property in case of any emergency.
